The Father’s Love

The Father's Love

From the Word

As Christians, 1 John 3:1 holds a profound significance for each of us. It invites us to deeply contemplate the personal love of God that has been uniquely bestowed upon us. The phrase ‘bestowed on us’ not only conveys essential points but also underscores the individual and intimate nature of God’s love. First, it vividly illustrates the vastness of God’s love for us; it could also be understood as ‘lavished on us.’ Secondly, it clearly portrays the way God gives love; ‘bestowed’ suggests a one-sided giving rather than a response to something earned.

Why We Doubt

What leads us to question or doubt the love of God? Sometimes, it may be due to a sense of pride that requires us to demonstrate our worthiness of God’s love before we can accept it. In other cases, it can be attributed to unbelief, as we struggle to trust God’s love amidst the trials and suffering we witness. Sometimes, it’s simply a matter of time before an individual gradually comprehends the immense depth of God’s love.

His Declaration

When God says ‘Behold,’ it’s not a mere statement. It’s a powerful declaration of His desire to witness and share His love with us. He proclaims, ‘You, the humble, the sick, the unknown, and the unremarkable, I have declared before heaven and earth. I have made the angels aware that you are my children, and I do not feel ashamed of you. I proudly acknowledge that I have chosen you as my sons and daughters.’

His Transcendent Love

The magnitude of God’s love is revealed because it bestows us the title of ‘children of God.’ When God looked down upon lost humanity, He could have felt compassion or pity toward our plight in this life and eternity. He could have devised a salvation plan to spare us from hell. However, God’s love transcended that, choosing instead to elevate us to the esteemed status of ‘children of God.’ This is not a mere title but a testament to His deep love and care for us. He is a good Father.
