Suffering's Good Effect

Precious metals such as gold have long been recognized for their great value. Gold is refined, formed into bars, minted into coins, and traded with the hope that its value will increase over time. But what if there were something even more valuable than gold—something available to every believer, requiring no financial investment, yet often arriving in a form none of us would willingly choose?

The Apostle Peter tells us that there is something more precious than gold. Surprisingly, it is not suffering itself, but genuine faith that has been tested through suffering.

1 Peter 1:6–7
"In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."

Suffering was never part of God's good creation. It entered the world through humanity's rebellion against God. Yet our sovereign God is never powerless before evil. Rather, He graciously uses suffering to accomplish His redemptive purposes and to conform His people into the likeness of Christ.

We see this beautifully illustrated in the life of Joseph. Though his brothers intended evil against him, God used their sinful actions to preserve many lives.

Genesis 50:20
"As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today."

Joseph's suffering ultimately pointed forward to a greater sufferer. Isaiah prophetically describes the Messiah as the "Suffering Servant." Jesus willingly bore the weight of our sins so that we could be reconciled to God.

1 Peter 3:18
"For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring you to God."

The greatest good in human history came through the greatest suffering ever endured—the suffering of Christ on the cross for sinners. Because of His sacrifice, our suffering is never meaningless.

So how does God continue to use suffering in the believer's life?

• 2 Corinthians 1:5 — Abundant suffering brings abundant comfort.
  
• 2 Thessalonians 1:5 — Suffering demonstrates our participation in God's kingdom.
  
• Hebrews 2:10 — Christ was made complete for His redemptive mission through suffering.
  
• Hebrews 5:8 — Christ demonstrated perfect obedience through suffering.
  
• Romans 5:3–5 — Suffering produces endurance, character, and hope.
  
• Romans 8:17 — We share in Christ's sufferings and His future glory.
  
• Philippians 1:29 — Believing in Christ includes the privilege of suffering for Him.
  
• 2 Timothy 2:3 — A faithful soldier of Christ endures hardship.
  
• 1 Peter 2:21 — Christ left us an example to follow in His steps.
  
  

This perspective is certainly counterintuitive because suffering was never God's original design. Yet a day is coming when Christ will make all things new.

Revelation 21:4
"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."

God has promised an end to suffering because Christ has already secured that victory. Until that glorious day, rather than asking only, "Why am I suffering?" perhaps we should also ask, "Lord, what are You teaching me about Yourself? How are You using this trial to make me more like Christ?"

May we trust that our heavenly Father wastes nothing. He faithfully uses every trial to refine our faith, deepen our dependence upon Him, and prepare us for the day when faith becomes sight.

Psalm 30:5
"Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning."

This month, we are honored to recognize Casey Wilson, a servant leader from our Hutchins Unit.

Casey’s journey is a powerful reminder that God’s plans are not canceled by our past. Restoration does not happen all at once. It happens through faith, accountability, obedience, and the courage to keep taking the next right step. Casey continues to show that real change is possible when a man is willing to grow, remain teachable, and trust God with his future.

Today, Casey is employed with Maddox Metal, where he has been blessed with more than just a job. His boss, Mr. Sammie, has chosen to believe in him, invest in him, and trust him with a work truck so Casey can remain dependable, continue working, and build greater stability for his future.

That kind of opportunity means more than many people realize. A second chance is not simply opening a door. It is giving someone the space to prove that they are not defined by their worst decision or their hardest season. When others may have only seen Casey’s past, Mr. Sammie saw his potential.

We want to sincerely thank Mr. Sammie and Maddox Metal for choosing restoration over rejection. Thank you for giving Casey a real opportunity to work, grow, and move forward. Your kindness, trust, and willingness to give a second chance are helping change the direction of a man’s life.

At ROD Ministries, we have the privilege of walking alongside men like Casey through biblical teaching, accountability, discipleship, and genuine relationships. We are grateful to see God connecting that work with employers and community partners who are willing to stand in the gap and believe that people can change.

Casey’s story is still being written, and we believe the best chapters are still ahead. His progress reminds us that when faith, hard work, support, and opportunity come together, hope becomes something a man can actually build upon.
